Shadow Game. Michael Power ePUB ebook download Shadow Game deserves to be much better known. The first person narrative of a somewhat naive young white South African in early 70s Johannesburg who believes that his love for an older black man can survive the pressures of conforming to a conservative racist and homophobic society.

The writing is very direct, unpitying and to the point (shades of Hemingway?). As the narrator's illusions are dismantled piece by piece we see love turned into a destructive force by intolerance and the terrifying (il)logic of apartheid. What should be celebrated is turned to shame and rejection.

There is much ambiguity in the ending which I won't go into here for fear of spoiling the book. The final line is devasting.
