I'm not really sure what to say about City Crimes... Was it incredibly racist? Yes. Was it incredibly misogynistic?Completely. Was it full of violence? Absolutely. And yet somehow, if you kinda of ignore the racism and misogyny, which where definitely signs of the time it was written in, it's kinda not a bad read. It's sensationalist fiction, and hilariously melodramatic, which makes it quite comical at times (assuming you're ignoring all the terrible racism and misogyny, that is). Overall, a pretty fast read, and interesting, at least as a way of looking at what the mass public was reading in the mid 1800's.
